Bug Lab

Building a brand for the Austin insectarium and butterfly pavilion.

Brand Identity | Logo Design | Illustration

A project around a museum I wish existed here in Austin. This project was inspired by my experience training as a Texas Master Naturalist and childhood love of the museums I visited growing up in San Francisco, Boston, and New York.

organization mission

To create opportunities for positive interactions with insects to inspire appreciation, understanding, and protection of biodiversity.

community-oriented

Bug Lab reflects the vibrancy of the Central Texas community and environment. We also aim to be an institution serving our whole community, so accessibility is paramount and should always come first in design considerations. Language should be simple and clear, color choices follow accessibility guidelines, and designers should attend to evolving best practices in the field.

welcoming

In addition to accessibility considerations, our welcoming environment should be mindful that arthropods are a source of anxiety and fear for many people. We want to welcome and explore the world of arthropods for all and aim to create a safe space for evolving opinions and relationships with arthropods.

fun

Bug Lab should be fun! We’re a creative community lab, a research institution, an exploratory experience for all ages. Design choices should reflect the fun of childhood exploration.
